Two Koreas to Discuss August 15 Joint Events in Gaeseong

The Unification Ministry has approved a South Korean civic group’s plan to visit North Korea to discuss inter-Korean events marking the 70th anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule.

The South Korean committee preparing the joint events is said to have proposed to its North Korean counterpart on July 6 that a meeting be held in the North’s border city of Gaeseong to discuss details of the August 15 events. The North Korean committee accepted the proposal on Monday.

In the meeting set for Thursday, the South Korean committee is expected to propose that joint events be held simultaneously on August 15 in Seoul and Pyongyang and that the two sides send delegations to each other’s events.

North Korea plans to hold a national event praying for reunification from August 13 and 15 to mark the 70th anniversary of Korea’s liberation. It is said that the North may invite the South Korean committee to the event.

If the August 15 joint events are held, they would be the first in ten years since 2005.
