N. Korea Reports 99.97% Turnout in Local Elections

North Korean media has reported a 99-point-97 percent turnout in the nation's first local elections since Kim Jong-un came to power.

The North's Korean Central Broadcasting Committee and other media outlets reported that elections to select deputies for local assemblies were held beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday at polling stations around the nation.

While reporting the nearly perfect turnout number, North Korean media explained that people who were abroad or at sea were unable to participate in the vote.

The turnout figure is exactly the same as the last local elections held in 2011.

North Korea's local elections are held every four years. The number of seats is determined by the population of each area and representatives are essentially handpicked by the ruling Workers' Party.
