Assembly Speaker Calls for Constitutional Amendment

National Assembly Speaker Chung Ui-hwa has suggested that the nation launch discussions about amending its Constitution.

During a speech marking the 67th anniversary of the Constitution’s promulgation on Friday, Chung said it is the duty of the people to revise the Constitution to meet the demands of the age.

The speaker added that the constitution should properly reflect the major tasks and visions of a country undergoing structural transition.

Chung also called for reforming the nation’s election system, which he described as winner-takes-all and dominated by regional hegemony, in reference to redrafting the nation's electoral districts.

Officially proposing that the parliamentary speakers of the two Koreas hold meetings, Chung said he is willing to meet his North Korean counterpart any time and at any place.
