Agricultural Ministry to Lift Ban on Livestock Movement

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs will lift a ban on the movement of livestock, which had been instituted following last year's occurrence of avian influenza (AI).

The ministry made the announcement Wednesday, noting that it had been 30 days since any culling and disinfections had been carried out following the last case of AI at a duck farm in Yeongam on June 10.

In lowering the four-level AI alert by two tiers to its lowest level, the ministry explained that examinations of poultry in affected regions had found no abnormalities.

There have been 162 cases of AI around the nation since last year resulting in  the culling of more than five million chickens and ducks at 234 farms.

The restrictions on the movement of livestock will be lifted as of 6 p.m. Wednesday.
