The Air Force announced on Wednesday that it opened a situation room that will share space-related data acquired from the U.S. Strategic Command with domestic agencies.

The establishment of the space data situation room is a follow-up measure to an accord signed last September between the defense ministries of South Korea and United States.

Based on satellite data, including GPS, the South’s military will carry out operations by utilizing information on possible collisions of space debris and satellite communication of enemy countries.

In line with the opening of the situation room, the Air Force, Korea Meteorological Administration and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute adopted an agreement on sharing the information provided by the situation room.

The establishment of the situation room is the first stage of the Air Force’s three-stage program on boosting military strength in the area of space. By 2040, the program aims to set up land- and space-based defense systems to neutralize enemy country’s satellites.
