A South Korean team has won a contest aimed at developing robots capable of assisting humans in responding to natural and man-made disasters

Team KAIST from Daejeon beat out Team IHMC Robotics of the United States with its Hubo robot at the DARPA Robotics Challenge in Pomona, California on Saturday.

Twenty-three teams competed in the contest, held by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. For two days, the robots were graded on their ability to complete eight tasks, including driving a vehicle, opening a door and turning a valve.

In grabbing the top honor, the KAIST team took home two million U.S. dollars, or about 220 million won, in prize money.
