A team of investigators from the World Health Organization (WHO) will visit South Korea as early as next week to study the spread of MERS with the South Korean government.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced on Friday that the government and the WHO agreed to carry out the joint evaluation considering the international community’s concern over differences in how the disease is spreading in South Korea and Saudi Arabia.
Kim Gang-lip, a diplomatic representative who has been dispatched to South Korea’s Permanent Mission in Geneva, said earlier that WHO Assistant Director-General Keiji Fukuda will travel to South Korea next week to lead the investigative team.
Kim said the WHO has yet to finalize the team and dates. He said that in line with International Health Regulations, the investigative team will collect data on how MERS spreads as well as ways to test for the disease and share the collected information globally.
