Police Warns Forcible Quarantines May be Necessary

The head of the National Police Agency says forcible quarantines of people suspected of being infected with MERS may be necessary in the face of the rapid spread of the deadly virus.

While visiting the Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency on Thursday, Commissioner General Kang Sin-myeong said if people suspected of being infected fail to comply with orders from the police or health authorities, they will be promptly quarantined by force in line with related laws.

Currently, those suspected of a MERS infection that have refused to self-quarantine can be slapped with fines of three million won or less but cannot be forced into quarantine.
