Unusually heavy rain and sweltering heat are forecast for this summer.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said Friday that summer will begin in earnest from June with many days of unusually high temperatures. It forecast that sizzling heat in the peak of summer will continue into July.

Summer typhoons will be more frequent this year. A total of eleven to 14 typhoons are expected during summer, with two or three likely to strike the Korean Peninsula.

The KMA projects that typhoons will be stronger than usual as effects of El Niño have raised the water temperature in the northern Pacific Ocean by more than one degree.

Monsoon season is expected to arrive later this year. Precipitation will be less in June and July than in past years. However, August is expected to see heavier than usual downpours.
