South Korean scientists have developed a thermoelectric alloy twice as efficient as existing materials.

The Department of Energy Science at Sungkyunkwan University and the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology at Samsung Electronics said Friday that they jointly developed the new material by liquefying tellurium, an element of thermoelectric material, and interspersing the liquefied tellurium across the material.

The researchers said the formula for manufacturing the new alloy is simple and that they expect it will be commercialized for wide use.

The report on their research was published in the journal Science on Friday.
