Gov't to Develop ActiveX Alternatives by 2017

The government has decided to establish a system by 2017 that would replace ActiveX for the nation’s top 100 private-sector Web sites.

The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning announced Wednesday that it plans to shift within two years 90 percent of 100 key Web sites in the private sector to systems that do not use the Microsoft-developed framework.

The government will first introduce a simplified online payment system for security and authorization. Currently, 66 percent of domestic sites use ActiveX for online payments.

The government will fund half of the cost of establishing standardized systems and will develop within two years a total of 48 alternative technologies to ActiveX.

ActiveX is a program Internet Explorer users must install for user identification and online payments. The requirement to use ActiveX and digital certificates has been criticized as an inconvenience for online shoppers.
