S. Korea Likely to Face Frequent Dust Storms This Spring

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), South Korea suffered from an average of one-point-two days of yellow dust last winter. The number was the fourth highest since nationwide weather observation began in 1973.

KMA data showed on Tuesday that Seoul suffered from six days of yellow dust last winter, which was five-point-one days more than the yearly average. It is the highest number since weather observation began in Seoul in 1908.

A KMA official said the pollution was brought on by low snowfall, high temperatures and dry weather last winter in Mongolia and northern China where the dust mainly originates. Low pressure and strong winds also created ideal conditions for the dust storm.

The weather agency added that a northwesterly wind would carry yellow dust, forecasting frequent dust storms this month.
