Korean Polar Researchers Prove Glacial-Interglacial Cycles

The Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) has discovered empirical evidence of the glacial and interglacial cycles through its exploration to the Antarctic mid-ocean ridge.

Through its joint research with University of Oxford and Harvard University, the institute said it discovered for the first time in the world evidence of the glacial and interglacial cycles, which had been only speculated through formulas, from the oceanic crust of the Antarctic mid-ocean ridge.

KOPRI published the findings on Thursday in an online edition of the world-renowned academic journal Science.

The mid-ocean ridge is an underwater mountain system consisting of mountain ranges enveloping the entire earth like baseball knots. It extends about seven-thousand kilometers.
