Nation's Oldest Dinosaur Fossils Found in Chilgok

Fossilized bones unearthed in
Chilgok, North Gyeongsang Province are believed to be those of the oldest
dinosaur found in Korea.

Chilgok County and the geological heritage
institute affiliated with Chinju National University of Education said Sunday
that dinosaur fossils estimated to be 130 million years old were recently found
in the area.

The institute, commissioned by the county to
conduct a comprehensive academic research in the area, speculated that the
fossils belong to plant-eating sauropods. Scientists working on site pointed
towards the long neck, long tail dinosaur because of the size and the shape of
the ribs.

The fossils were found in the Nakdong stratum and
date back to the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic Era. Scholars believe that
the stratum was formed 130 million years ago.

So far, the nation's oldest dinosaur fossils were
found in the Hasandong stratum, which is believed to have been formed 120
million years ago.
