SNU Scientists Discover Gene Enabling Parrot to Mimic

For the first time in the world, local scientists have identified an evolution mechanism that has enabled parrots to mimic humans.

A research team at Seoul National University said Friday that it analyzed around eight-thousand genes shared by 48 species of birds.

The researchers discovered that a gene related with the ability of learning how to vocalize different sounds has developed particularly in the parrot.

The gene, located inside the brain, oversees the ability to remember and mimic sounds. The SNU researchers expect the discovery will lead to identifying the causes of language disorders.

The research was published in the prominent Science journal.
