President Park Calls for Easing Digital Divide at ITU

President Park Geun-hye said the international community must seek to resolve the digital divide between developed and developing countries in order to advance the human rights and welfare of people around the world.
 
Park made the remark at the opening ceremony of the 19th Plenipotentiary Conference of the International Telecommunications Union on Monday, adding that there are worries that the digital revolution may widen the information gap among countries and regions.
 
She said in order to set technology standards and international norms in cyberspace, governments must adjust their interests by becoming more open, building more flexible decision-making systems and strengthening private sector cooperation.
 
Park said security in cyberspace and the real world is intricately linked, which may increase dangers to society. As a result, she said governments need to strengthen international response mechanisms while new convergence industries and services must achieve security and credibility from their inception.
 
Introducing South Korea's creative economy initiative, she said the nation will lead the digital revolution by becoming the first in the world to commercialize fifth-generation mobile communication services in 2020.
 
The president also said South Korea will share its experiences in building an e-government and pursuing a creative economy with the international community.
