Animal Biosafety Level 3 Research Facility to Open Next Year

The Environment Ministry announced it will build the country's first Animal Biosafety Level Three (ABSL-3) facility for wild animal disease research.

The research facility will be located inside the National Institute of Environmental Research in the city of Incheon. The three-story building will house an animal breeding room and an ABSL-3 containment room where tests on animals can be conducted.

ABSL-3 facilities are used to handle organisms that have been infected with diseases that could be transmitted through the air or could cause serious or potentially lethal disease for humans.

The building will be completed by August next year.
