Domestic Scientists Find Cancer Related Enzyme

South Korean researchers have discovered an enzyme that expedites the spread of cancer.

Led by Doctor Um Hong-duck, a research team at the Korea Institute for Radiological and Medical Sciences found that an enzyme called “complex 1” is a key factor in causing the spread of cancer cells.

The scientists explained that located in mitochondria of cells, the enzyme generates reactive oxygen species, leading to cancer's spread.

The researchers also identified that the p21 protein, a controller of cell growth, helps curb the spread of the disease by breaking down a substance that encourages metastasis, or the spread of cancer from one organ to another.

The finding is expected to increase the chances of success of cancer treatments.

The feat was published in the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) report.
