The 2014 International Congress of Mathematicians in Seoul will close on Thursday after a nine-day run.
Some 52-hundred mathematicians and over 20-thousand participants from 122 countries took part in the world's largest congress in the mathematics community.
In the first congress hosted by South Korea, mathematicians shared their latest research results and unveiled current trends in the mathematics community through lectures and panel discussions.
Large crowds filled up halls where programs were featured for the general public, including a film screening and the board game of Go, called "baduk" in Korean.
At this year’s event, Iranian-born Stanford University Professor Maryam Mirzakhani and Paris-6 University professor Artur Avila, both recipients of the Fields Medal, are regarded to have opened a new chapter in the history of mathematics. Mirzakhani became the first female to receive the honor, while Avila is the first winner to hold a doctor's degree from outside the U.S. or Europe.
Pohang University of Science and Technology Professor Park Hyung-joo, who headed the organizing committee for the event, said he is content that the congress ended successfully after seven years of preparation.
The next International Congress of Mathematicians will open in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil in 2018.
