Endangered Species of Long-horned Beetle Found in Gyeonggi Province

An endangered Korean long-horned beetle was discovered at the Korea National Arboretum in Gwangneung, Gyeonggi Province.

The arboretum said it discovered a male long-horned beetle on Tuesday in one of its forests. After being fed, the beetle was then released back into the woods.

The discovery of the endangered species is the first since a female beetle was found in 2006. The long-horned beetle, whose scientific name is callipogon relictus, is registered as South Korea’s Natural Monument Number 218.

The arboretum said it believes the beetle was found in its forests, as they host well preserved red-leaved hornbeams, which are home to the beetles.
