Math Society Aims to Boost S. Korea's Category in IMU

The Korean Mathematical Society is looking to upgrade South Korea’s category of membership in the International Mathematical Union (IMU).

The mathematical society made the announcement on Tuesday amid the 2014 International Congress of Mathematicians being held in Seoul until Thursday.

The society said it is considering requesting that the IMU upgrade South Korea’s membership to be included in category five, which is considered the club of advanced countries in mathematics. It added it is looking at making the request at the next International Congress of Mathematicians that will open in Brazil in 2018.

The IMU categorizes its 70 member states into five groups in line with their level of mathematics. South Korea currently is in category four, or the second highest category.
