No. of Heatstroke Patients Drops This Summer

The number of patients with heat-related illnesses has plummeted this summer with milder temperatures.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that a total of 534 people received medical attention at emergency rooms for heat-related illnesses between June and August this year. The number shows a 42 percent drop from 919 recorded during the same period last year.

The center said only one person died from heat stroke this summer, a plunge from last year’s ten.

The disease control agency explained that temperatures this summer were lower than previous years with some typhoons passing by the Korean Peninsula. It added that the nation experienced heat waves on 19 days during this summer, only half the number recorded last year.

Heat waves refer to the weather condition when daily highs soar to 33 degrees Celsius or above.
