Int'l Congress of Mathematicians Opens in Seoul

The 2014 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) has opened in Seoul for a nine-day run.

President Park Geun-hye attended the opening ceremony on Tuesday morning as awards were given to top scholars.

The Fields Medal, which is regarded to be the Nobel Prize of the mathematics community, was presented to four people, including Stanford University Professor Maryam Mirzakhani.

The Iranian-born mathematician is the first woman to win the Fields Medal since the award was introduced in 1936.

Some five-thousand mathematicians from around 120 countries are taking part in lectures and exhibitions in the largest ICM ever held.
