Typhoon Nakri is moving northward toward the West Sea.
The typhoon, detected 510 kilometers south of Seogwipo in southern Jeju Island on Friday morning, developed into a mid-sized typhoon overnight on Thursday.
It is expected to pass Jeju Saturday night and move northward toward the West Sea.
A typhoon watch was issued on Friday afternoon for waters south of Jeju. As Nakri moves upward, high wind and wave alerts will also expand to the surrounding areas.
One-hundred to 300 millimeters of rain is expected to fall in Jeju by Saturday. For the southern region of the peninsula, 20 millimeters to 60 millimeters of rainfall is expected, while southern coastal areas and Mount Jiri are expected to receive over 100 millimeters. The central region of the country will see about 5 to 40 millimeters of rainfall on Saturday.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said if the typhoon moves through the country at a slow pace, it will bring more rainfall with more than 400 millimeters by next Tuesday for Jeju, as well as the southern coastal areas and Mount Jiri.
