Typhoon Neoguri Moving Upward; S. Korea Expects Rain, Wind

Approaching typhoon Neoguri is expected to affect Jeju Island, as well as the southern and eastern coastal areas of South Korea.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said Tuesday that the regions will experience strong rain and wind for two days beginning Wednesday.

The weather agency said Neoguri is expected to move off the western coast of Okinawa on Tuesday and make its way upward off the southern coast of Jeju Island on Wednesday. The typhoon will then turn eastward and land on northern Kyushu in Japan Thursday morning.

The KMA said that some parts of Korea will experience wind up to 30 meters per second.

Heavy rainfall is also expected with 50 to 120 millimeters forecast to fall in Jeju, while 30 to 80 millimeters of rain is expected in southern and lower eastern coastal regions of the country. Southern inland regions, the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon Province are expected to see between 5 to 40 millimeters of rain.

High waves, up to 10 meters high, are also expected to hit southern and eastern coasts.

Neoguri is a mid-sized typhoon with a 480-kilometer radius and maximum sustained winds of 51-meter-per-second.
