Researchers Discover Rare Terrestrial Planet in Binary Star System

U.S.-based magazine, Science, says a joint team of astronomers, including South Korean researchers, discovered a cold terrestrial planet orbiting one member of a binary star system.

Among the astronomers, Chungbuk National University Professor Han Jung-ho led a team of researchers. The professor said most planets in binary star systems orbit around two stars, but the recently-discovered planet orbits around only one.

Astronomers in the joint team also said the planet’s mass is two times that of Earth and lies projected at around zero-point-eight-astronomical units (AU) from its host star, or about the distance between Earth and the Sun.

The magazine said the latest discovery confirmed the possibility that planets can exist in an environment that is completely different from the solar system.
