Domestic researchers have developed eco-friendly coal which emits significantly less carbon dioxide.

The Korea Institute of Energy Research said that a research team has produced “hybrid coal” by removing moisture from pores of low-grade coal and filling the pores with eco-friendly biomass such as sugar cane or glycerol.

The team said that the hybrid coal has a higher energy efficiency than conventional low-grade coal, while emitting 30 percent less carbon dioxide.

The team plans to export the technology to major coal importers such as Indonesia, Mongolia and Rwanda.
