Gangneung Sees 1st Tropical Night of the Year

Gangneung in Gangwon Province saw the nation’s first tropical night of the year on Thursday.

Weather officials said Friday that overnight lows in Gangneung stood at 25-point-nine degrees Celsius on Thursday.

Tropical nights are characterized by overnight lows that do not fall below 25 degrees.

This year’s first tropical night in the city arrived a little over a month earlier than last year. It is the earliest tropical night to be recorded since Gangneung first began gathering weather data in 1911.

The city’s last early tropical night occurred on June 4, 1987.

Meanwhile, afternoon highs are set to stand at 34 degrees Celsius in Gwangju, 33 in Gangneung and 32 in Seoul and Daejeon on Friday.
