South Korea will open a national brain bank next year in an effort to assist research for brain-related diseases.

On Thursday, the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and the Korea Brain Research Institute announced a mid-to-long-term plan to promote brain research.

Under the plan, the institute will run a brain bank starting next year, once it obtains permission from the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The envisioned facility will store brains, cerebral tissues and spinal cords.

Established in Daegu in 2011, the Korea Brain Research Institute leads research and development projects to combat and treat brain diseases and disorders.
