Study: Peak Intensity of Tropical Cyclones Moves Polewards

A study shows the average latitude where tropical cyclones achieve the peak intensity has been shifting toward the poles both in the northern and southern hemispheres.

By analyzing data compiled between 1982 and 2012, a research team at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration found the location where tropical cyclones reach maximum intensity has been moving further away from the equator at a rate of 53 to 62 kilometers per decade.

As a result, the location has moved some 160 kilometers further from the equator over the past 30 years.

The researchers explained the poleward migration may pose increased typhoon-related risks to some regions, including South Korea and Japan.

The finding was published in the science journal Nature.
