South Korea has completed the construction of its second research base in Antarctica.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries says a ceremony will be held on Wednesday at the new base named Jang Bo-go. Around 300 people will attend the ceremony, including National Assembly Speaker Kang Chang-hee, ministry officials, the head of the Korea Polar Research Institute and representatives from the U.S., New Zealand and Italy.
Korea is only the tenth country to have at least two research bases in Antarctica.
The Jang Bo-go base covers four-thousand-458 square meters and consists of 16 buildings. It is capable of accommodating up to 60 people. Construction cost over 100 billion won.
Fluid mechanic technology was adopted so the base can withstand minus 40 degree Celsius temperatures and 65 meter per second winds.
The first group of 15 researchers will study glaciers, meteorites, the ozone layer and extreme engineering at the base through the end of the year.
