Number of Quakes in 2013 Double Previous Years

South Korea’s weather agency says there were 93 earthquakes last year stronger than two-point-zero on the Richter scale. This is nearly double the amount of quakes than on average in previous years.

The Korea Meteorological Administration said new data shows two four-point-nine magnitude earthquakes were recorded in April and May in waters off Heuksan and Baeknyeong islands. It said they were the 6th most powerful earthquakes ever measured in Korea.

The administration also said those regions plus Boryeong recorded 52 minor quakes, up sharply in frequency from previous years.

While it is too early to conclude these are the signs of a looming massive quake, authorities believe there are active fault lines in the Yellow Sea and plan to conduct comprehensive research through next year.
