The number of new cancer patients has almost doubled over the past decade, and the five-year survival rate is also climbing.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare released cancer statistics from 2011 on Thursday showing 218-thousand people were newly diagnosed that year. That’s an increase of 96 percent from 2001.

The report showed roughly 110-thousand men and 100-thousand women were diagnosed.

The five-year survival rate of people diagnosed with cancer stood at 66 percent, up 12 percentage points from 54 percent in 2005.
