On-line Music Market Heats Up with “Dokdo Love”
While South Korean citizens are lodging strong protest against the prefectural council of Shimane in Japan that approved the bill to designate February 22nd as “Takeshima Day,” the local on-line music market is also heating up with the patriotic movement of safeguarding the sovereignty over Dokdo. According an on-line music website Max MP3, the downloading of the song “Dokdo Is Our Territory” sung by Jeong Gwang-tae and a re-made version by DJ.DOC rapidly surged since March 16th, the day of the approval of the bill by the Japanese prefectural council to designate “Takeshima Day.” The number of streaming services plus the number of downloading the MP3 files of the song recorded more than 13,000. The average number of streaming of the song during the week recorded more than 5,000 per day. An official of Max MP3 said “As safeguarding the sovereignty over Dokdo is a national movement, the company is planning to provide the streaming services of the song free of charge after consulting with the holder of the copyright of the song.” On the contrary, the sales of streaming services of Japanese songs through the on-line music website has rapidly decreased showing the controversial issue is affecting many Koreans to hold back their positive interest in Japanese pop culture.
