During winter, mountains of Korea are covered with snow and turn into all-white world.
They look even bluish with the reflecting color of the snow.
Covered with ice, the mountain waits for sunshine.
And the sunlight shines even more beautifully on the snow.
Mountain Sobaek is the place where we can meet with the living winter. |

Sobeak literally means small Baekdu as in Mt, Baekdu.
It also means white as it bears white snow on top.
As crossing the mountains, winter stops at Sobaek.
It moves again after staying there for while.
The breath of winter leaves traces on every tree.
Finally winter has come in the valley of Sobaek.
And it knocks on the door of a mountain man who lives high on Mt. Sobaek at an altitude of 630m above sea level.
He has spent so many winters there and now sees the coming of another one. |

This village was named "Musum" meaning an island.
The beautiful sand fields stretch down along the river.
Everything in this village tells the passing of time.
Old folks who were born and raised here still keep the way of life handed down by their ancestors.
They prepare fuels in old ways and warm their houses slowly with efforts.
The lesson we find in old ways is a never-changing truth.
For an old couple, winter is the time to have a rest and prepare for the coming spring. |

Nature allowed people to come.
New people have come to the mountain along this way which is linked to the world.
For some people Sobaek is the place to make their living during winter.
They decided to stay in the mountain to earn their living.
They look even busier in front of burning charcoal furnaces.
They harbor charcoal throughout winter without rest.
Winter comes to disciplinants who have retired from the world.
They are more enlightened through this winter which feels much longer and colder for them.
Drumming sounds in a quiet temple echo in the mountains and wake up all nature. |
