Both having graduated from the prestigious KAIST institution, Shin Jae-pyeong and Lee Jang-won formed Peppertones to "provide a new therapy for depression". The two rocked out in the streets of the Hongdae in the early 2000's, the heart of the indie music scene in Seoul. Their music was progressive with a distinct upbeat, bright appeal.
After releasing their first official mini-album in 2004 under the indie music label Cabaret Sound, they attracted attention for their electronic rhythm that maintained an emotional chord to it. They stayed true to this style for their future official albums (1st album in 2005, 2nd in 2008), establishing a spot for themselves in the cutthroat mainstream field as well.
The duo switched labels to a more mainstream one, Antenna Music, which was also home to touted singer/songwriters, Yoo Hee-yeol, Jung Jae-hyeong, and Lucid Fall. They release their 3rd album under this label in 2009, again with the same Peppertones-esque sound.
However, after a 2 and a half year-haitus, the group underwent a noticeable musical change for their 4th album. Shin described the album to feature a more rough, unpolished sound. Whereas Peppertones had previously tried to perfect their previous tracks to have zero-flaws, they didn't re-do the "mistakes" in their songs and just left the "flaws" as is. Even if there was slight mistake in their recordings, if the feeling portrayed was okay, they left the song untouched. Rather than aiming for perfect songs, they aimed for comfortable songs. Also, the team often featured female artists with smooth, sweet vocals before. In their fourth album though, with the exception of one song, the duo filled their tracks with their own
voices.
They did maintain their positive feel..with the exception of one song.
It's also the one song where a female artist guest-featured on : Black Mountain. This song has a darker, heavier sound that goes against the style Peppertones had become known for.
