MPK Reinstates Rep. Lee Hae-chan

The main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea(MPK) has reinstated independent lawmaker Lee Hae-chan, who left the MPK earlier this year after he was excluded from the party’s nominations for the April 13th general elections.

Youn Kwan-suk, the MPK spokesman, told reporters that the party reached the decision on Lee's reinstatement during a meeting at the National Assembly on Friday.

Youn said lawmakers at the meeting also decided to seek merging with the nonparliamentary Democratic Party and establish a special committee on strengthening the party’s organization.

Following reports that procedures for his reinstatement had been finalized, Lee vowed to work toward a transfer of power in the MPK and for the completion of Sejong City as the country's administrative hub.

After being elected in the 20th parliamentary polls in April as an independent, Lee, who is a seven-term lawmaker and former prime minister, sought to rejoin the MPK. However, his efforts hit a snag under the party’s leadership led by former interim leader Kim Chong-in.

With Lee's return, the MPK now has 122 seats in parliament.
