Assembly Panel, Biz Groups Sign MOU on Fighting Low Birthrate

South Korea's public and private sectors are coming together to work towards reversing the country's declining birthrate.

National Assembly lawmakers were joined by leaders from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry as well as several other business umbrella organizations Friday in signing on to a set of joint measures to improve the country's work and family balance.

They're promising to gradually curtail long working hours and to foster a corporate culture that encourages employees to take advantage of maternity and paternity leave.

South Korea's low birthrate is often described as a "demographic time bomb" with deep implications for the country's economy and security.
