About Korea
The Korean Peninsula is located in the northeast region of the Asian continent. The Korean territory consists of a peninsula that juts out to the southeast and some 3,200 islands. It borders China and Russia to the north and faces Japan across the Straits of Korea to the southeast.
Korea has long been a homogenous nation made up of the Korean people. Although the recent influx of foreigners is slowly transforming Korea into a multiethnic nation, the country still retains the characteristics of a single ethnicity nation. Nonetheless, Koreans have become more embracing of people from other racial and ethnic groups.
The official language of Korea is Korean. The Korean language is defined as "a language used mainly around the Korean Peninsula by the Korean people." At present the Korean language is used by roughly 70 million people in both South and North Koreas and about 3.5 million ethnic Koreans living overseas.
Korea's climate is temperate with features of both continental and marine climates. Korea has four distinct seasons. Its summer is hot and humid, while winter is cold and dry.
The national flag of Korea is called Taegeukgi. Dynasties throughout Korean history traditionally did not have national flags. The first discussion on adopting a national flag took place in 1880 (the 17th year of King Gojong's reign), but no progress was made.
The Republic of Korea guarantees freedom of religion, allowing many different religious beliefs to thrive here.
Korean history spans from the founding myth of Dangun through the Three Kingdom Period, the unified Silla Kingdom, Goryeo Dynasty, Joseon Dynasty, Japanese occupation, the national division, and the period of the Republic of Korea.
Korea is well-known for its wonderful sights and sounds, delicious food, and exciting entertainment. The country has four distinct seasons and provides many opportunities to appreciate exceptional natural sceneries in the mountains, seas, and plains, as well as unique historical and cultural heritage.
