Enjoying the deep trust of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, Jon
Jae-son is the leader of the younger generation of military officers.
Though he is considered open-minded, his rock solid loyalty to Kim
is unquestionable.
Moving up quickly in the ranks in the People’s Army, he was named
major general in 1981, colonel general in 1985, general in 1992 and
deputy commander-in-chief in 1997. Since 1986, he has served as a

In 1998, he was elected to the 10th Supreme People’s Assembly and
began accompanying Kim on visits to military bases, reflecting the
North Korean leader’s high confidence in Jon.
Jon’s career in the People’s Army has included appointments as deputy
chief of the Bureau of General Staff (1981); commander of the 5th
