Profile |
After Korea’s liberation in 1945, Kim Du-nam studied at General
Staff Academy in Moscow. Upon his return home, he served as a frontline
commander before his 1970 appointment as deputy commander of the People’s
Army’s artillery command. In 1980, the Military Committee of the Korean
Workers’ Party named him councilor and in 1982 promoted him to chief
of its military bureau. He was later made a general and served as
an aide to leader Kim Il-sung until the leader’s death in 1994. Afterwards,
Kim Du-nam was appointed superintendent of Kumsusan Palace, where
Kim Il-sung is buried. In times of need, incumbent leader Kim Jong-il
is said to call on Kim Du-nam on military matters.
Kim Du-nam is known as quiet and introverted but also as a sharp thinker
and artillery expert. He used to convey orders to the military straight
from Kim Il-sung, but has dropped out of the spotlight given his absence
at official events.
His brother Yong-nam is the president of the Supreme People’s Assembly. |
