Multinational Forum on Park's Peace Initiative to Kick Off Tuesday
2015-10-26 Updated.

A government-initiated multinational forum to discuss President Park Geun-hye’s peace initiative for Northeast Asia will kick off in Seoul on Tuesday.

Hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the 2015 Northeast Asia Peace and Cooperation Initiative Forum will bring together government officials and private sector experts to discuss the theme "A New Horizon in Multinational Cooperation for Northeast Asia” at the Grand Hilton Hotel in Hongeun-dong for three days.

Representatives from countries concerned in the stalled six-party talks on denuclearizing North Korea, including the U.S., Japan, China, and Russia will participate in the forum. High-level inter-government talks will also be held on the sidelines.

Officials from Mongolia as well as international organizations such as the United Nations, the European Union and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) will also attend the meetings.

The foreign ministry invited North Korea but, as of Monday, had yet to receive a response.

The participants in the inter-government talks slated for Wednesday include Chinese vice foreign minister Liu Zhenmin, U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Policy Sung Kim, Kimihiro Ishikane, director-general of the Japanese foreign ministry’s Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, and Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov.

The Northeast Asia Peace and Cooperation Initiative is a multilateral platform through which Seoul plans to build an infrastructure of trust between major countries in the region and other stakeholders over such regional issues as nuclear safety and joint responses to terrorism.
