US Envoy to Six-Party Talks: Nuclear, Human Rights Not Incompatible
2014-10-30 Updated.

Sydney Seiler, U.S. special envoy for the six-party talks with North Korea, said Thursday that denuclearization of North Korea and addressing the North's human rights issues aren't incompatible goals.

At a closed-door roundtable meeting held at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies with South Korean media and experts, Seiler said pursuing denuclearization and better lives for North Koreans isn't a zero-sum game.

He stressed cooperation among the five nations of the six parties, excluding North Korea. He said the five parties must demand in one voice that there will not be a channel other than the multi-party talks.

He said that cooperation between the U.S. and China on the North's nuclear issues has become stronger over time, adding that Beijing still has significant influence over Pyongyang on the matter.

He said he will continue to work to make Pyongyang understand that nuclear weapons don't guarantee the safety of the North Korean regime.
