Candidates |
|
All candidates must be South
Korean citizens at least 40 years of age who have lived
in the country for at least five years as of Election
Day.
A person who has received a prison sentence and whose
sentence remains in effect is not eligible to run for
president. Similarly, a person whose election eligibility
is suspended or forfeited due to a court ruling or other
laws is also ineligible. |

Candidate
Registration |
A candidate is endorsed
by either a political party or a certain number of electors.
Registration by a party-endorsed candidate must be accompanied
by an endorsement letter signed by a representative
of the endorsing political party.
An independent candidate, meanwhile, would need the
endorsements of 2500 to 5000 electors from five or more
districts. Each of those districts must have 500 or
more electors who have filed resident registrations.
|
| |
| Registration
Period |
The period for candidate registration begins
24 days before the start of Election Day and lasts
for two days. A candidate has from nine a.m. to
five p.m. on those two days to submit his or her
registration. |
| Deposit Money |
A presidential candidate must pay a deposit
of 500 million won. The deposit is returned to
the candidate upon his or her election, death
or if the candidate garners 15 percent or more
of the vote.
Half of the deposit money will be returned if
the candidate wins more than ten but less than
15 percent of the vote. |
| Voter Eligibility |
All South Korean citizens aged nineteen or above
have the right to vote in a presidential election.
A person who has received a prison sentence and
has not completed that sentence or been exempted
is not eligible to vote in a presidential election.
A person who has been fined more than one million
won for violations of laws regulating elections
or political funds is not eligible to vote if
a certain period has not passed since his/her
sentencing.
A person whose right to vote is suspended or forfeited
in accordance with a court ruling or other law
is not eligible to vote. |
